Laurence Everett Pope II (September 24, 1945 – October 31, 2020) was an American politician. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Pope worked for US Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama as a diplomat. From 1993 to 1996, Pope was the Ambassador to Chad.[1][2] In 2000, President Clinton nominated him to be Ambassador to Kuwait but Pope was not confirmed by the United States Senate.
Pope was a special envoy to Libya from October 11, 2012 until January 4, 2013 during the aftermath of the 2012 Benghazi attack.[3]
Pope died on October 31, 2020 at his home in Portland, Maine from cardiac arrest caused by pancreatic cancer, aged 75.[4]
